Beleaguered by a heavy debt load, the Journal Register--publisher of numerous Hispanic newspapers-- is at risk of filing for bankruptcy. It has reportedly secured the services of the investment bank Lazard to act as adviser in plotting the way forward.

A variety of options are on the table, including filing for bankruptcy protection and significant restructuring. Some blame the collapse of the automobile industry and the ensuing dearth of related ad-dollars as responsible for the newspaper industry's economic woes.

The Journal Register Company currently publishes:

Las Noticias (Kingston, NY)

Registro (Troy/Albany NY; New Haven, CT; Hartford, CT; Waterbury/Danbury, CT)

La Voz (Norristown, PA; Reading, PA)

El Latino Expreso(Lorain, OH; Trenton, NJ)

No word yet from the company on how its financial situation will affect their Hispanic newspaper properties.
